Northeast Ohio winters punish roofs with freeze-thaw cycles, heavy snow loads, ice dams, and wind. By spring, even a well-maintained roof may have developed problems that need attention before the storm season hits. Rockstar Roofing LLC recommends every homeowner in Ashtabula, Lake, Geauga, and Cuyahoga counties perform this checklist each spring.
Inspect Your Gutters and Downspouts
Start with your gutter system. Remove leaves, twigs, and debris that accumulated over fall and winter. Check for sagging sections where hangers have pulled loose. Make sure downspouts are directing water at least four feet away from your foundation. Clogged or damaged gutters cause fascia rot, foundation erosion, and basement flooding.
Look for Missing or Damaged Shingles
Walk around your home and scan each roof slope with binoculars. Look for missing shingles, curling edges, cracked shingles, and dark patches where granules have worn away. After a harsh Ohio winter, wind damage and ice dam effects are common. Even a few missing or damaged shingles can lead to leaks if not addressed before spring rains.
Check Flashing Around Penetrations
Flashing around chimneys, plumbing vents, exhaust fans, and skylights is a common leak point. Look for flashing that has lifted, rusted, or separated from the roof surface. Winter ice and thermal expansion often loosen flashing seals that were fine the previous fall.
Inspect Your Attic from Inside
Go into your attic on a dry day and look for new water stains on the sheathing or rafters. Check for daylight showing through the roof deck. Look for mold or mildew, which indicates moisture has been entering the attic space. If your attic smells musty, moisture is likely present even if you cannot see stains.
Trim Overhanging Branches
Trees that overhang your roof drop leaves into gutters, provide a path for animals to access your roof, and pose a falling hazard during storms. Trim branches back at least six feet from the roof surface. This also reduces shade that promotes moss and algae growth on shingles.
Clear Debris from Roof Valleys
Roof valleys collect leaves, pine needles, and debris that trap moisture against the shingle surface. This trapped moisture accelerates shingle deterioration and can cause leaks at the valley seam. If you can safely access your roof or use a leaf blower from a ladder, clear debris from all valleys.
Check Your Attic Ventilation
Verify that soffit vents are not blocked by insulation or debris. Make sure ridge vents are clear and functional. Proper ventilation prevents summer heat buildup that damages shingles from below and winter moisture that causes mold and rot. Blocked ventilation after winter insulation projects is a common issue.
Schedule a Professional Assessment
If you find any concerns during your inspection, or if your roof is over 15 years old, schedule a professional assessment. Small issues caught in spring cost a fraction of what emergency repairs cost after a summer storm. Rockstar Roofing provides free estimates for homeowners across Northeast Ohio.
